Learning something new...

I am attempting a new hobby. And I stress ATTEMPTING.... My mother in law makes beautiful cabbage patch clothes, she not only makes them for the girls she has a store on Ebay. She is very talented, she follows no patterns and the quality of her clothes is outstanding I am very jealous. I asked her if she could teach me how to sew, she was very excited to say the least and even let me borrow one of her sewing machines to bring home and practice. So today was my first lesson. Not as easy as one would think. I am totally dumb when it comes to stuff like this, I always walk by all the fabric and think "oh I wish I could sew and make something for someone" but never did I consider all that is involved. So after about an hour in a half of learning to thread the machine and needle, I was off, I soon realized I can't sew in a straight line to save my life and pushing a petal and sometimes a separate lever and guiding fabric all at the same time is not easy for me to do. The whole process is a bit overwhelming to me, but I am determined to learn. I think I may even purchase the book sewing for dummies, because I really need to learn more basics. Luckily for me my teacher is very patient. I am going to practice at home this week with just feeling more comfortable with the machine and get a better feel for it, then with my mother in laws help I will try to tackle a pattern, maybe pajamas for the girls or a purse. Wish me luck and who knows maybe I will actually get good at it and I will be able to make some extra special Christmas gifts for everyone. You should check out my mother in laws Ebay store to see her work, Hailey's picture is even on it. If you go to Ebay's home page hit the advanced search button and type in crawford176 in the sellers spot. She has the cutest doll clothes..

This is so funny, Rachael just bought a sewing machine. We are both clueless but she got a lesson from her MIL and is doing well. We saw some really great books at Joann's with "hip" patterns and ideas. You will get it, just keep trying, and I'll be asking you for lessons! Google "Amy Butler" very very cute stuff! It will keep you inspired:)

Girl - I am SO proud of you for challenging yourself on something new!! I too have been jealous of those who can sew such beautiful things. Believe it or not, my mother is excellent at it...something I obviously did NOT inherit from her! ~HA~ Let me know how it goes. Who knows, maybe you can teach me someday!!
Love ya!

It is so funny...not that you are sewing, but that I asked Jimmy for a sewing machine for my birthday. I want to use it on my scrap book and make pillows. Keep up the good work and get really good in the next few weeks...I am going to need all the help I can get!!! Between you and my mom..hopefully something will stick.

I think that is so great Shelly!! I have wanted to learn how to sew for a while now. I think you should ask Becky if she wants to do double lessons! ;)

I had a machine once. Pat's mom bought it for me. It was handy for curtains and shortening pants. (I did that a lot) I got pissed many times because my threading job always got messed up in between storage sessions...I never figured it out. It was in a case every time. The spool holder broke during my last move (how??) and I threw it out. My mom and grandma used to make so many of our clothes, plus doll clothes, barbie clothes and halloween costumes. Good luck and stick with it.

Hey...I never really learned how to sew!! I have always wanted my Mom to show me how...So when Sara was a baby (9 years ago, I took some old tshirts and cut them up and made a blanket for her...and now it is Sams! But at the time, I started 3, one for me, one for Matt and one for Sara...I just found the tshirt squares for matt's and mine!!! It really is hard work...I need a sewing machine...my Grandma gave me hers(which was her moms!!!) a few years ago, but I have to take it to a sewing machine place and see if they will teach me how to use it!!! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME, if i could actually find the time!!!

GOOD luck!!!
